Why Should We Compost?

Composting improves the quality of land and soil, the air we breathe, and the water we drink!

Did you know nearly 24% of the garbage landfilled in our County is food waste that could have been composted?

Composting reduces waste by diverting our food waste from our landfill to the composting facility, where it’s converted into a valuable, saleable product—processed compost!

This diverts waste from our landfill, cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions and the contamination of our water and soil.

The result is a Prince Georges's County that’s cleaner, greener, and healthier.

Composting Supports and Strengthens Our Local Economy!

By diverting food waste and yard trim from our landfill, we use processed compost to make LeafGro Gold, a nutrient-rich fertilizer sold to professional landscapers who purchase about 800 tons of compost each year.

The sale of LeafGro covers the operating costs of the composting facility, including the new jobs it supports and the additional waste pickup it provides.

Composting Provides an Additional Free Waste Pickup!

Prince George’s County removes waste from your home with three pickup services each week for trash, recycling, and now collection of food scraps combined with yard trim.

Our environmentally friendly waste removal program is a national model that helps residents keep their homes and communities cleaner and greener.
